What to install

At 5.1.0 the man pages are installed by default. The two filesets found on Volume 1 of the AIX 5.1 base media are:

Common problems

The following section describes some of the most common problems associated with man pages, along with information on how to correct these problems.

$MANPATH

One common problem is caused from setting the $MANPATH environment variable to an incorrect or missing directory. To resolve this problem, refer to the man manual page.

Non-standard format

Another common problem is expecting man pages in non-standard format to be viewable by the man command. To see the formats viewable by the man command, and to learn where the man command looks for man pages in specific formats, refer to the man manual page.

Migration installation

Another common problem seen after a migration installation is that the majority of the man pages text files are empty. Follow these steps to confirm that this situation is causing the problem:

  1. Enter the following command to show the path of the text files:
         lslpp -f bos.man.en_US.cmds

  2. Enter the following command to change to the correct directory:
         cd /usr/share/man/info/en_US/a_doc_lib/cmds/aixcmds4

  3. Enter the following command to verify that most filesets are empty:
        ls -l

To correct this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Reinstall the bos.man.en_US.cmds package and its requisite software using Volume 1 of the AIX 5.1 base media.

  2. On the Install and Update from LATEST Available Software panel, use the following defaults:
Install and Update from LATEST Available Software

Type or select values in entry fields.
Press Enter AFTER making all desired changes.

      AUTOMATICALLY install requisite software? no
