This document describes the bootp booting procedures. The following booting procedures apply to all AIX releases.

Preliminary client information


MCA booting procedure

To begin the procedure, enter the following:
sync;sync;sync;halt
Wait for shutdown. Move to the section below that applies to the type of system and proceed with the steps in that section. Then continue to the "BOOTP menu" section.

Uniprocessor bootp

  1. Power off the system.
  2. Turn the key to Normal mode.
  3. Power on the system.
  4. Turn the key to Secure mode within one second.
  5. Wait for LED 200.
  6. Turn the key to Service mode.
  7. Reset once within one second.
  8. Wait for the BOOTP Menu (Section D).
  9. If bootp is not enabled, as determined by the failure to display the BOOTP Menu, use an RIPL Emulation Disk.

Multiprocessor bootp

  1. Verify that the power is off and that the key is in Service mode.
  2. Verify that an ASCII terminal is on the first serial port.
  3. Press Enter on the ASCII terminal.
  4. Type sbb and press Enter.
  5. Enter 1 for flags.
  6. Enter x to exit.
  7. Power on the system.
  8. Wait for the Maintenance Menu.
  9. Enter 8 for Maintenance Menu.
  10. Enter 2 to Enable Service Console.
  11. Enter 6 for System Boot.
  12. Wait for BOOTP Menu (Section D).
  13. If bootp is not enabled, as determined by the failure to display the BOOTP Menu, use a RIPL Emulation Disk.

BOOTP menu

Once at the BOOTP Menu, follow these steps:
  1. Enter 1 for Select Boot Device.
  2. Choose Adapter from the list.
  3. Wait for the new menu Set or Change Network Address
  4. Enter 3 for Ping Tests.
  5. Verify the settings.
  6. Enter 4 for Exit and Boot.
  7. Turn the key to Normal mode.
  8. Press Enter.

PCI booting procedure

To begin the procedure, enter the following:
sync;sync;sync;halt
Wait for shutdown, then follow these steps.
  1. Power on the system.
  2. Wait for tweedle, or beep.
  3. If the console is an ASCII terminal, press 1 for SMS (System Management Services). If the console is a graphic console, press F1 for SMS.
  4. If prompted, insert the SMS diskette.
  5. Wait for the menu.

If an ASCII menu is displayed, move to the next section. If a graphical menu is displayed, move to the section "Graphics menu".

ASCII menu

  1. Enter 4 or move the cursor to Utilities.
  2. Enter 11 or move the cursor to RIPL Setup.
  3. Enter 1 or move the cursor to IP Parameters.
  4. Enter 3 or move the cursor to PING.
  5. Choose the appropriate adapter.
  6. Verify the settings and press Enter.
  7. Wait 15 seconds. The status will return success or failure.
  8. Press Enter, then press Escape.
  9. Press Escape again.

If the process failed, go back to the preceding step 3, "Enter 1 or move the cursor to IP Parameters", and follow these steps.

  1. Press Escape.
  2. Enter 2 or move the cursor to Select Boot Devices.
  3. Choose Adapter from the list. A pop-up window will display the message Starting Software.

Graphics menu

  1. Click on Utilities or tab over to that field and press Enter.
  2. Click on RIPL or tab over to that field and press Enter.
  3. Click on Set Address or tab over to that field and press Enter.
  4. Move the cursor up and down to select fields.
    • CLIENT is the IP address of "This Machine".
    • SERVER is the IP address of the bootp server.
    • NETMASK is the bitmask for the client's LAN.
    • GATEWAY is the IP address of a router on the client's LAN which can forward traffic to the server or the server's IP address if there is no gateway.
  5. Click on Save or move the cursor to Save and press Enter.
  6. Click on Exit or move the cursor Exit and press Enter.
  7. Click on Ping or move the cursor to Ping and press Enter.
  8. Verify settings. Move the cursor up and down to select the appropriate adapter.
  9. Click on Ping or move the cursor to Ping and press Enter.
  10. Wait 15 seconds. The message OK will blink under the Ping button.
  11. Click on Exit or move the cursor to Exit and press Enter.
  12. Repeat the previous step twice, then click on Boot.
  13. Move the cursor up and down to select the appropriate adapter and press 1 to enable it.
  14. Click on Save.
  15. Click on Exit. At the next box, click on Exit again.

At the top right, the information BOOTP: S=1 R=1 will display. If   S and/or R are set to greater than one, then the BOOTP server is not responding.

The information TFTP: S=x R=x-1 will also display at the top right. If   S and R do not increment within 30 seconds, then the tftp server is not responding. Sent packets should be one greater than received packets.

The machine should come up shortly.
