NFS Mount Install Using Remote Tape Media

Environment

Problem

An 8mm tape drive on a system 560 needs to be used to install software on a remote system 320.

Solution

First install the products to hard disk for future installation (server), export the NFS filesystem (server), and then NFS mount the filesystem (client). The following steps describe this procedure.

On the server

1. Create a separate user filesystem:
   • Enter smitty jfs.
   • Select Add a Journaled File System.
   • Select rootvg for the Volume Group Name.
   • Enter the size of the user-created filesystem in 512-byte blocks.

     NOTE: If 200 Mb of filespace is needed, allocate 200x2048=409600. Enter the number 409600 in the field for the size of the filesystem.

   • Enter your mount point (for example, /usr/sys/inst.images).
   • Press Enter to add a Journaled File System.

2. To mount the user created filesystem:
   • Enter mount <filesystem> (for example, mount /usr/sys/inst.images)

3. Copy the installation product to hard disk for installation:
   • Enter smitty bffcreate.
   • Enter the name of the filesystem mounted in step 2 (for example, /usr/sys/inst.images).
   • Select the products, PTFs, and so on that you want to copy to hard disk for the installation or upgrade by pressing F4, or leave the default to install a PTF tape or the whole tape to hard disk.

     NOTE: If you select "all", ensure that you have enough filespace in your user-created filesystem (for example, /usr/sys/inst.images) for the whole tape, since the option EXTEND file systems if space needed? does not allocate more filesystem space if needed.

   • Press Enter to copy the files to hard disk.

4. To add the filesystem for NFS exporting:
   • Enter smitty mknfsexp.
   • Enter the PATHNAME of the directory to export (for example, /usr/sys/inst.images).
   • Press Enter to export the filesystem.

On the Clients

1. In order to NFS mount the filesystem on the client, do the following:
   • Enter smitty mknfsmnt.
   • Enter the PATHNAME of the mount point (for example, /usr/sys/inst.images).
   • Enter the PATHNAME of the remote directory (for example, /usr/sys/inst.images).
   • Enter the HOST where remote directory resides.

     NOTE: HOST will be the hostname or IP address of the server.

   • Press Enter to NFS mount the filesystem.

2. For installing products on the client, the input device is now the directory of the NFS-mounted filesystem (for example, /usr/sys/inst.images).
