Error "system received a parameter that is not valid"

Environment

OS Level: AIX Version 4.1.4

Problem

A mksysb is failing with the error: 

   System received a parameter that is not valid

After the execution of either the mkdev or chdev commands, the next operation to the tape drive fails with the preceding error. This problem occurred with the Hidalgo 4mm tape drive, which is the C1553A 6 cartridge 4mm internal tape drive shipped in the F30.

Solution

This is caused by incorrect switch settings on the tape drive. To correct the problem, complete the following steps:

  1. Remove the tape drive from the F30.
  2. Uncover the 8-place dip switch by removing the mounting plate from the tape.
  3. Set the switches to the correct settings shown below: 
       1 -> on
   2 -> on
   3 -> off
   4 -> off
   5 -> on
   6 -> on
   7 -> on 
   8 -> on
